FISHING REPORT
May 18th, 2012
We are now operating out of Portland, targeting Southern Bluefin Tuna and Albacore. Portland tuna fishing charters depart daily. Fish are currently getting caught in close behind Lawrence Rock and continuing on to the Continental Shelf. Warrnambool is currently experiencing a good run of Southern Bluefin Tuna, which have been caught in close 500m from the breakwall. These fish have been very finicky, as they are feeding on white bait.

We had some great weather over the weekend, it allowed for some offshore fishing, where we had some great catches of gummy sharks, just after the full moon. Large flathead were also caught keeping the anglers busy. There is still a good run of calamari squid inside the bay, with salmon also starting show up.

Good number of snapper are being caught, along with calamari, flathead and salmon. As the water warms up we should start to see some sharks in Bass Strait.
Over the last few weeks we have been involved in the Snapper Tracker Program conducted by Department of Primary Industries. Acoustic tags are inserted into the fish to gather data on snapper migration.

Snapper continue to be caught off Barwon Heads and Torquay with our best for snapper season 2011 at 3.5kg. There are plenty of smaller snapper around ranging from 25-32cm, making it hard to keep a bait down for the bigger fish. Squid continue to be caught at Swan Bay and Portsea, with size and numbers increasing.

With the recent warm weather, Ocean Grove Fishing Charters have been catching pinky snapper offshore from Torquay to Ocean Grove, as well as a few nice Nannygai. Fishing within Port Phillip Bay has seen the whiting still biting, before the sun gets to high, with also quite a few squid starting to show around Swan Bay and St Leonards.
